Becoming a woman in Okrika

Female initiation rituals in the Niger Delta, Nigeria.

Iria, the female initiation ritual on Okrika Island, in the Niger Delta, prescribes that girls getting close to marrying age are fattened for three weeks. At the end of the segregation period they are exposed in public. The presence of water spirits during a collective race confirms their final entering into adultness.
